The short answer: Vitamin E is a real skin antioxidant, but true deficiency is rare in healthy people and the evidence for rubbing capsule oil on your face is thin. If you want it in a supplement, a formula that supplies a few milligrams alongside other nutrients is the sensible route: one 400 IU capsule delivers roughly 12 to 18 times the daily need (180 to 268 mg against 15 mg). It won't lighten your skin, and it doesn't replace sunscreen.
Why everyone has a vitamin E story
Ask around and nearly everyone has one. An aunt who pricks a capsule and dabs it on a scar. A friend who swallows one every morning "for the skin". A video that says to stir it into your night cream. It's cheap, it sits by every pharmacy till, and almost nobody can say what it's actually doing.
We went looking for the real answer: what the research supports, what it doesn't, and where a supplement makes sense. This isn't a top-ten list. Vitamin E turns out to be a better supporting actor than a star, and that changes what's worth buying.
What does vitamin E actually do for your skin?
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant. In skin it sits in the oily layers and helps mop up free radicals, the unstable molecules that sunlight, smoke and pollution create. Part of it reaches the surface through the oils your own skin makes.
That's the lab story, and it's solid. The mirror story is shakier. A 2007 review in Molecular Aspects of Medicine noted that vitamin E has been used in dermatology for more than 50 years, yet controlled clinical studies that would justify specific doses or uses are still lacking. A 2025 review of 44 studies looked at vitamin E and UV damage, and it's a good place to start if you want to read the research yourself.
One point for Sri Lanka's sunshine: antioxidants taken by mouth are an add-on to sunscreen, not a replacement. A review of oral photoprotection describes them as complementing topical protection.
Should you eat the capsule or rub it on your face?
Swallow capsules that are sold as supplements, and don't treat them as a face product. If you want vitamin E on your skin, choose something formulated for skin.
The pierce-and-dab habit is popular, and plenty of people do it without trouble. Still, a supplement capsule isn't a tested cosmetic, its oil wasn't made with your face in mind, and some people react to topical vitamin E with an itchy red rash (contact dermatitis). If you try it anyway, patch-test a dab on your inner forearm for 24 hours first, and keep it away from your eyes and any broken skin.
Don't expect much from it, either. A systematic review of topical vitamin E for scars found the evidence inconclusive, with many studies showing no improvement in how scars looked (summary). A dermatology review of vitamins in skin care likewise found no data to support claims that topical vitamin E improves wrinkles, discolouration or texture (HAPPI summary).
Will vitamin E lighten or whiten skin?
No. We found no reliable evidence that vitamin E changes natural skin tone, and the dermatology review above found nothing to back claims about discolouration. Experimental work suggests vitamin E may help stabilise the skin barrier, but that is a long way from changing colour. Anything that promises a shade change is overselling.
How much vitamin E do you actually need?
Adults need 15 mg of vitamin E a day, about 22 IU of the natural form, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The upper limit for supplements is 1,000 mg a day (1,500 IU natural, 1,100 IU synthetic), and the NIH adds that some research suggests harm even below that.
The table puts the common amounts next to that 15 mg.

Labels use mg or IU, and brands differ, so check which unit your capsule uses. On current labels, one milligram of alpha-tocopherol equals about 1.49 IU of the natural form or 2.22 IU of the synthetic form. That makes a 400 IU capsule about 268 mg if it's natural and about 180 mg if it's synthetic. As a rule of thumb, "d-alpha" on the label means natural and "dl-alpha" means synthetic.
Who should be careful with vitamin E supplements?
Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners, are having chemotherapy or radiotherapy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a condition that affects how you absorb fat.
The reason is bleeding risk. High doses of alpha-tocopherol supplements might increase the risk of bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke), according to MedlinePlus, which also says that eating vitamin E in food isn't risky. The NIH fact sheet lists anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines such as warfarin, simvastatin taken with niacin, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy among the interactions to watch (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
Men should know about one more finding. In the large SELECT trial, men who took 400 IU of synthetic vitamin E daily had a 17% higher risk of prostate cancer than men on placebo, and the NIH says regular large doses may increase that risk.
The same caution runs the other way. People who can't absorb fat properly are at greater risk of a genuine deficiency, and that's a job for a doctor, not a beauty counter.
If you already take a multivitamin that lists vitamin E, you're probably near the daily need already. There's rarely a reason to stack a high-dose capsule on top.
Can you get enough vitamin E from food?
Food is the safest source, and a varied diet goes a long way. Vitamin E is concentrated in seeds, nuts, vegetable oils and leafy greens. One ounce (about 28 g) of dry-roasted sunflower seeds supplies roughly 49% of the daily need, the same weight of almonds about 45%, and a tablespoon of wheat germ oil roughly 135%. Peanuts, spinach and mango add smaller amounts (NIH food table).
US survey data put average intakes below the recommendation, at about 9.8 mg a day for males and 8.5 mg for females aged 2 and over. The NIH notes that figure may be low because cooking oils are hard to count, and it describes outright deficiency as rare. Those are US numbers, not Sri Lankan ones.
Because vitamin E is fat-soluble, it's absorbed better alongside some fat. A handful of seeds over a salad dressed with oil does the job neatly.
Where vitamin E shows up in our range
A note before the shopping list: our Vitamin E collection is mostly beauty formulas and multivitamins that contain vitamin E, not single-ingredient capsules. That fits what the research above points to, but it means you should read each label for the amount.

NeoCell Hair, Skin & Nails Beauty Builder Gummies
This is the most transparent label of the four. Each two-gummy serving gives 5 mg of vitamin E next to 50 mg of vitamin C, 2,500 mcg of biotin, 5 mg of zinc and 200 mg of collagen peptides. That's about a third of the daily need, a nudge rather than a megadose, which is how we'd want vitamin E to show up in a beauty product. The trade-offs: the collagen is bovine, so it isn't vegetarian, and each serving carries 2 g of sugar.
Beauty Vault Lumi 24H Glutathione
One day capsule in the morning, one night capsule before bed, in a formula built around glutathione with bioactive collagen, vitamins C and E, alpha-lipoic acid and Fernblock extract. The page doesn't say how much vitamin E it contains, so don't buy it for the vitamin E. Buy it if the glutathione-led routine appeals, and expect gradual results that vary from person to person. It's for adults only, so check with a healthcare professional if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication.
Nature's Way Complete Daily Multivitamin with Antioxidants
Not a beauty product but a baseline one: vitamins A, C and E, the B vitamins, vitamin D3 and biotin in a single tablet, taken 1 or 2 a day with food. At 200 tablets it's the cheapest per day of the four. If you already take a multivitamin like this, you've probably covered your vitamin E. The label carries a warning about vitamin A in pregnancy.
Centrum Silver Women 50+
One tablet a day for women over 50, with vitamins A, C, D, E and the B vitamins plus minerals, according to the product page. Choose it for the age-specific formula, not for skin results.

A simple vitamin E routine
- Start with food: seeds, nuts, vegetable oils and leafy greens.
- Check your multivitamin before adding anything. If it lists vitamin E, you're probably covered.
- If you do buy a supplement, choose one that states the amount (mg, or IU with natural or synthetic marked), not just "contains vitamin E". Our guide to buying authentic supplements online covers what else to check.
- Take it with a meal that has some fat in it.
- Wear sunscreen. No antioxidant replaces it.
- Judge results over months, not days, and stop if you notice a rash or anything unusual.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a vitamin E capsule every day?
For most people there's no need. Adults need 15 mg a day, and a typical multivitamin supplies about 13.5 mg. A single 400 IU capsule is roughly 12 to 18 times that, depending on whether it's synthetic or natural. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking one daily, especially if you use blood thinners.
Is it safe to put a vitamin E capsule on my face?
Many people do, but a supplement capsule isn't a tested skin product and some people develop a contact rash. Patch-test on your inner forearm for 24 hours, keep it away from your eyes and broken skin, and stop if irritation appears.
Does vitamin E lighten skin?
No. We found no reliable evidence that vitamin E changes natural skin tone. It's an antioxidant, not a lightening agent.
What's the difference between vitamin E oil and vitamin E capsules?
Cosmetic vitamin E oil is sold for use on skin, while capsules are supplements made to be swallowed. Only the oil was made with your face in mind.
Which is better for skin, vitamin C or vitamin E?
They do different jobs. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation, while vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant. Studies have looked at the two together for sun protection, but whether they protect skin is still uncertain. Our vitamin C guide covers the other half.
Does vitamin E help hair growth?
The evidence is limited. The best-known study followed 38 volunteers for eight months and used mixed tocotrienols, a form that most capsules and multivitamins don't contain. Hair loss has many causes, so see a doctor if yours is sudden or persistent.
When is the best time to take vitamin E?
Any time of day, with a meal that contains some fat, because vitamin E is fat-soluble. Our guide to morning versus night supplements has more on timing.
How much do vitamin E products cost in Sri Lanka?
Single-ingredient capsules are usually priced per capsule or per pack, and the price depends on the brand and strength, so compare the cost per capsule. The four vitamin E-containing products we checked on 22 October 2026 range from Rs 6,500 to Rs 11,500 per pack, or roughly Rs 36 to Rs 383 a day.
Where can I buy vitamin E in Sri Lanka?
Single-ingredient capsules are sold at pharmacies and online marketplaces. Beauty formulas and multivitamins that contain vitamin E are available from SupplementVault.lk with islandwide delivery. Whichever you choose, check the seal, the expiry date and the amount on the label.
Is it okay to swallow a vitamin E capsule?
Capsules sold as supplements are made to be swallowed, with water and ideally with a meal that contains some fat. Follow the directions on the label, and check whether the amount is in mg or IU before you decide it suits you.
What are the side effects of vitamin E?
Vitamin E from food isn't linked to problems. High-dose supplements might raise the risk of bleeding, including bleeding in the brain, and can interact with blood thinners. On the skin, vitamin E can cause an itchy red rash in some people.
Can I take vitamin E during pregnancy?
The NIH recommended intake in pregnancy is 15 mg a day, the same as for other adults. Ask your doctor before adding a separate vitamin E capsule, and check any multivitamin you already take.
Does vitamin E remove dark circles or pigmentation?
There's no reliable evidence that it does. A dermatology review found no data to support claims that vitamin E improves skin discolouration. For pigmentation that bothers you or keeps spreading, see a dermatologist, and wear sunscreen.
Can I mix a vitamin E capsule with coconut oil for my hair?
Many people do, but we found no strong evidence that it improves hair growth, and the same patch-test advice applies. Hair loss that is sudden, patchy or persistent needs a doctor's opinion.
Are vitamin E capsules vegetarian or halal?
Softgel capsules are often made with gelatin, which is animal-derived, so check the label for vegetarian or halal status. Of the products in our guide, the NeoCell gummies contain bovine collagen and aren't suitable for vegetarians.
Which foods in Sri Lanka are good sources of vitamin E?
Sunflower seeds and almonds are among the richest everyday sources, and vegetable oils such as sunflower oil are high too. Peanuts, spinach, mango and tomato add smaller amounts, so a varied diet helps.
Can I take vitamin E with glutathione or collagen?
Many beauty formulas combine them, including Beauty Vault Lumi 24H, which has glutathione, collagen and vitamin E in one product. What to watch is your total vitamin E across everything you take, so add up the labels, and check with a pharmacist if you use regular medication.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you're unsure whether a supplement suits you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
